River Ridge begins work on road connecting heavy haul corridor

Logistics Avenue improvements to open up flanking parcels for development

JEFFERSONVILLE — Although the heavy haul corridor connecting River Ridge Commerce Center with the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville won’t be complete until 2016, initial pieces of the project are in the works.

The River Ridge Development Authority on Monday unanimously approved design contracts with Jacobi, Toombs and Lanz Inc. for Phase II of work on Logistics Avenue, which will directly feed into the future heavy haul road.

Mark Hildenbrand, project manager and utilities director for River Ridge, said that the design contract is for an 850-foot portion of the road that is adjacent to Amazon.com’s distribution center. The road will connect to existing Trey Street on one end and to Eighth Street on the other, which will hook up to the Interstate 265 interchange.

The contract with JTL includes survey, design and bidding of the road construction.

With a signed interlocal agreement that is necessary to move forward with the project, the Indiana Department of Transportation has given the go-ahead for River Ridge to start working on the road early.

Marketing and Finance Director Paul Wheatley said that constructing that tail of Logistics Avenue to the heavy haul road will open up both parcels on either side to potential developers.

“That way, these are very marketable sites,” he said.

Construction of Logistics Avenue will start some time this summer, he said.

The $22.5 million future heavy haul road makes River Ridge a more desirable site, partially because there will be no increased permitting costs to transport materials to the port.

“It will serve River Ridge tenants wanting to use the barge and rail services that the port offers,” Wheatley said.
