Author to talk book on woman who escaped slavery

NEW ALBANY — A noted author, speaker and graduate of Indiana University is having a one-day special book launch event from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, Strassweg Auditorium, 180 W. Spring St., New Albany.

Kathryn Grant’s new  historical novel, “Honorable” and its companion book are about the life of Lucy Higgs Nichols. This is a long-awaited launch of a book about a young slave girl, the American Civil War and a Union regiment from New Albany.

Nichols’ adventures include how she fled from slavery in the South and headed North with her husband and 3-year-old daughter. She ran straight into a Union regiment from New Albany. The novel is based on her true story, her courage and how she helped the Union Army. After the Civil War, Nichols ended up living in New Albany as a member of the local community.

The “Honorable” companion book is ready and is written for grades four to 10 and for general readers. Lesson plans are available.

Come and meet the noted author, get your book, have it signed by her and pick up a free commemorative bookmark. Grant also will have available some of her previous published books. Many of her books are specifically for grades one through six.
