Seasonal sounds raise funds for charity

Louisville Thoroughbreds and Silver Creek carol for a cause

SELLERSBURG — If you happened to be driving through the Covered Bridge subdivision in Sellersburg this past Sunday evening, the sounds of Christmas would have been all around you, as a group of 60 talented carolers were making their rounds and spreading holiday cheer. Transported on two wagons, the group made their way through the neighborhood, performing classic Christmas songs such as Silent Night, Winter Wonderland and Joy to the World. It was a step back in time.

The caroling group was comprised of members of The Louisville Thoroughbred Mens Chorus, their spouses, friends and Silver Creek High School students. Each home receiving a personal caroling concert donated money, blankets, sleeping bags and food to a New Albany-based charity, “In Heaven’s Eyes.” The group’s mission is to minister to and help the homeless in Southern Indiana and Louisville.

“The Thoroughbreds love the opportunity to give back to the Kentuckiana community through music whenever possible,” said Thoroughbred Director Drew Wheaton. “We also enjoyed sharing our music with the kids from Silver Creek, which was a bonus.”

The concept was originated by Liz Lobeck, a teacher at Holy Family in New Albany, and wife of Thoroughbred member Dave Lobeck.

“It was great to involve the kids from Silver Creek High School, and the Thoroughbreds certainly took the music to a different level,” she said. “It was great fun and through the support of Covered Bridge residents, we are able to raise some money and much needed items for a great cause.”

Covered Bridge resident Steve Smith became nostalgic while listening to the caroling group in front of his home, surrounded by his family.

“This brings back wonderful memories for me, from when I was a kid. No one does this sort of thing anymore. The music was beautiful and my family absolutely loved it.”

More than $800 was raised for “In Heaven’s Eyes,” in addition to a trailer full of sleeping bags, blankets, coats and food.
