New Albany businesses collecting items for families affected by fire

Half the units at New Albany apartment damaged by last week’s blaze

NEW ALBANY — The owners of two local businesses reside in Cedar Ridge Apartments — the complex that was ravaged by a fire last week that destroyed half of its units.

Now Sew Fitting and The Opal Gypsy are leading an effort to collect items for families displaced by the blaze that damaged 12 of the 24 apartments.

“Thankfully, my family and I are safe and unharmed, but there are a number of families who have lost everything,” said Cisa Barry, owner of the downtown business Sew Fitting. “The blaze began so early that many didn’t even have time to grab coats or shoes.”

Sew Fitting will be collecting clothes, shoes, coats and gift cards at its location inside The White House Centre at 222 Pearl St. for the cause.

In addition, The Opal Gypsy — a boutique located at the corner of Bank and Market streets — is working in conjunction with Schmitt Furniture to provide furniture and other household items for the afflicted families.

Those interested in donating furniture are asked to contact The Opal Gypsy at 812-725-9744
