New Albany adds lot for greenspace, parking

Change orders approved for Bicentennial Park

NEW ALBANY — A lot adjacent to the Griffin Recreation Center will be purchased and cleared by the city to serve the facility.

The New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety approved purchasing the lot at 1410 Walnut St. for $18,983 on Tuesday.

“It will be good for overflow parking” and additional greenspace for activities, said David Duggins, director of economic development and redevelopment for the city.

Once the vacant lot has been mowed and cleared it will provide a view of the Griffin Center from State Street, he continued.

New Albany Parks Department funds will be used to foot the purchase. The Griffin Center is the home of the department’s administrative offices, and it also hosts a plethora of youth, adult and senior activities.

Bicentennial Park funds approved

Eleven change orders for New Albany Bicentennial Park construction totaling about $45,000 were also OK’d by the board of works.

The approval allows retainage funds on the project to be released to the contractor. The change orders included sewer improvements, the addition of features for handicap accessibility and funding for new trees for the park.

About $1,300 of the total footed the application of an anti-graffiti treatment to some of the features in the park, which sits at the corner of Pearl and Spring streets.

MAC Construction and Excavating built the more than $530,000 park. The New Albany City Council appropriated $312,000 for the park in 2011, and the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County provided a $225,000 grant for the project.

The change orders have also been approved by the New Albany Redevelopment Commission. Duggins said the New Albany Sewer Department will repay the city for the additional wastewater work, which was tabbed at $12,876.
