Accused child molester in Jeffersonville case commits suicide

Jeff man dies one day before sentencing

JEFFERSONVILLE — A former Jeffersonville resident who was to be sentenced Tuesday for the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl committed suicide Monday, according to his attorney.

Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Linda Lamping said Wednesday that Gary Brian Tanner, 37, died at his sister’s Louisville home, according to his attorney, David Schuler, who informed Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 of the death on Tuesday.

Tanner, formerly of Haystack Drive, had moved into his sister’s home, as conditions of his pretrial release prevented him from staying in his Jeffersonville home where the alleged sexual abuse of the child had occurred, Lamping said.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Tanner was expected to be sentenced to 14 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections. As Indiana offers its prison inmates a day removed from their total sentences for each day served, Tanner would have likely served closer to seven years in prison before beginning a six-year probation term.

Tanner had been charged with class A felony child molesting earlier this year, but through the recent plea agreement he was to be sentenced on four counts of class C felony child molesting. He had signed a preliminary plea agreement admitting to four incidents of child molesting, involving touching the child’s private area, between August and November 2010.

The alleged victim was a child that had befriended Tanner’s daughter.

Tanner was arrested in April 2013 after the child had reported the sexual abuse to a counselor at her school. He spent seven days in the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex before being released on a $10,000 bond.

Tanner had previously coached for the Net Surfers soccer club and at Louisville’s Ballard High School. Jeffersonville police, who investigated the case, has reported that Tanner is not believed to have ever coached a team in which the alleged victim was a player.

Lamping has said that after Tanner was to be sentenced in Clark County, he was expected to face additional charges in Kentucky for sexual abuse of the same child. He was accused of raping the girl in a Kentucky hotel while traveling for a soccer tournament.
