3:30 P.M. UPDATE: Woman hit, killed on Clark Memorial Bridge identified

Bridge reopened after a four-hour closure

LOUISVILLE — The name of the woman killed when she was hit by crossing Second Street at the foot of the Clark Memorial Bridge has been released.

Jefferson County, Ky., Deputy coroner Jim Wesley said Ryann M. Tewell, 24, Louisville, died Thursday morning from multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Louisville Metro Police said Tewell was hit by a cement-mixing truck that had made a right turn from Main Street onto the bridge. The driver was not aware he had hit someone until witnesses to the accident flagged him down.

Wesley said Tewell was an employee of Humana.

The Louisville Metro Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the crash that happened at 7:38 a.m., according to a report from news partner WAVE 3 News.

According to Mitchell, the preliminary investigation suggests this was a “very unfortunate accident.”

The bridge reopened at about noon Thursday.

Advance Ready Mix, the company that owned the truck, released a statement to the media Thursday afternoon.

“This was a tragic accident and our condolences go out to the family members and friends of the victim. We are working with police and conducting our own investigation to determine how this unfortunate accident occurred and any measures we may take to prevent a similar incident.

“The driver involved has a commercial driver’s license and has been with the company for nearly a decade with no previous accidents on the job. He cooperated immediately with police answering questions and submitting to every test requested. He will be on indefinite leave from his job. Safety is our top concern which is yet another reason why this incident is so tragic and concerning to us.”
