Sellersburg rape claim under investigation

Woman was working by herself in vacant home

SELLERSBURG — No arrest has been made in an ongoing investigation of an alleged rape that occurred in a home near Sellersburg on Friday afternoon.

Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Brian Meyer said a woman is claiming she was raped by a man who entered a vacant home on St. Joe Road that she had been hired to remodel.

Meyer said the woman was in the home by herself around noon when a man described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with tattoos on his arm, entered the home and committed the sexual assault.

He said after the incident, the woman, who is in her mid-to-late 20s, drove to a convenient store along Indiana Avenue and called 911 to report the assault.

Meyer said the Sellersburg Police Department responded to the woman’s location, and sheriff’s officials went to the home where the alleged rape occurred and began an investigation into the woman’s claim.

The home where the woman was at the time is on St. Joe Road, near the intersection of Creek Road.

Clark County Sheriff’s Maj. Donnie Bowyer said his office has names of five or six possible suspects who live in the area and the office is looking into all possible leads. Bowyer said several registered sex offenders live within several miles of the home.

Bowyer was hopeful an arrest would be made in the coming days “to put the community at ease,” he said.
