Williams, Webster nominated as Clark County GOP candidates

CLARK COUNTY — The Clark County Republican Party nominated candidates for two positions to face off against incumbent Democrats in November’s general election.

Chairman Jamey Noel said that the party nominated Kyle Williams for Circuit Court No. 3 Judge and Martina Webster for Assessor. Williams will run against Judge Joseph Weber and Webster against Assessor Vicky Kent Haire, both Democrats who hold the positions and were unopposed in the primary election in May.

Williams, a Jeffersonville attorney, has practiced law in Indiana and Kentucky for 20 years. He has a bachelor of arts from Indiana University and a doctorate of law from the University of Louisville.

“I’ve done everything from wills to a murder trial...” he said. “[There’s] very little I haven’t done as an attorney.”

Williams said he is a good candidate for the position because his conservative ideals will lead to a responsive government.

“I think I’m a fair person with wide, varying experience,” he said.

As Circuit Court No. 3 judge, Williams said he will uphold the integrity of the system and make sure people get fair results.

He said another goal is to improve the relationship between the court system and the people, especially in light of recent media attention on the county’s courts.

Clark County’s drug court program has grabbed many controversial headlines but was an issue related to Circuit No. 2, not No. 3.

Noel said that Williams’ legal experiences makes him a good candidate.

“I think he’ll be more than fair,” Noel said. “He’s a person of integrity.”

Webster, who lives in Sellersburg, has been a Realtor for 15 years, a broker for four years and is a level three certified assessor. She has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Indiana University Southeast.

She said she decided to run because of her passion for politics.

“I’m always on the side of trying to hold government accountable,” she said.

Her goals as assessor come from the point of view of both a Realtor and a taxpayer.

“I would like the parcels to be fair and equitably assessed,” Webster said. “I would like the ratio studies to show that we’re doing a good job for the market value.”

She also said she is interested in redevelopment and the operation of TIF, or tax increment fund, districts.

“I feel like as an assessor, it would give me a voice to go to redevelopment meetings and city council meetings,” she said.

Noel said Webster’s unique qualifications make her the right person for the position.

“I think Martina’s pretty motivated,” he said. “She gained that level three certification, which is tough for any assessor to attain.”

In addition to Williams and Webster, the Clark County Republican Party announced at the end of May that Jeffersonville Attorney Brad Jacobs will run for Circuit Court No. 2 against Democrat Laura Harbison.

Harbison gained the Democrat slot during the primaries with 56.4 percent of the votes, beating incumbent Judge Jerry Jacobi.

Noel said that the Clark County GOP also nominated Mike Poppelwell for Silver Creek Township Trustee and advisory board positions for Silver Creek, Utica and Carr townships.
