Pence lauds Jeffersonville firm in state of state remarks

Amatrol cited in governor's push to eliminate business tax

INDIANAPOLIS — In his State of the State speech on Tuesday, Gov. Mike Pence repeated his plea to the General Assembly to pass legislation to phase out the business personal property tax to make Indiana more competitive and used examples of local businesses to make his case.

Among them: Amatrol, a Jeffersonville-based manufacturer of technical training systems and interactive software for schools and industry. Paul Perkins, whose parents founded the company, was invited by Pence to be in the gallery of the House chamber when the governor delivered his speech.

Perkins said he was happy to come offer his support for Pence’s tax plan: “We support that idea. Our view is that the state has to be competitive with other states and that’s one of the last remaining issues where we’re not very competitive.”

Perkins, who chairs the state’s Workforce Innovation Council, also supports Pence’s call for redesigning vocational education to make it more responsive to both students’ and employers’ needs.

“Workforce training is one of the most important things that our state has to continue to do,” Perkins said. “As we attract new businesses, and businesses like mine continue to grow, it continues to put strains on the supply of skilled labor. We have to continue to invest in that area.”

Pence’s remarks on Amatrol:

Don and Roberta Perkins started their company in 1964 to manufacture technical training systems and interactive multimedia software for colleges, industry and high schools. Today, Amatrol employs 143 Hoosiers, and in 2010 it was named the Indiana Outstanding Business of the Year.

These are just two Indiana success stories that we can help with the right kind of tax reform. Join me in welcoming Nate Richardson of Coeus Technology and Paul Perkins of Amatrol who are with us tonight.
