WEATHER BLOG: Cold, snow, repeat

— The cold weather is the biggest story, but we have another chance for snow in the forecast. Yet another clipper-type system will dive in overnight bringing light snow to portions of Southern Indiana and Kentucky. A light (1 to 2-inch) accumulation is possible, mainly along and east of Interstate-65. This could cause a few problems if you have to be out early Saturday morning.

The deep freeze shows little reprieve over the next week. With the exception of weekend highs near or just above freezing, the remainder of the extended forecast has temperatures below 32 degrees. In fact, we began today with readings below zero and will likely experience more sub-zero readings next week.

It’s another arctic blast flowing in from Canada. High pressure in the west is creating problems of its own building on the driest 2013 for much of California. That ridge of high pressure is allowing the jet stream to dive into the Midwest and Ohio Valley. This is opening the door for cold Canadian air to pour into this region. Many areas from North Dakota, Great Lakes, and the Ohio Valley are experiencing their coldest winter in years.

The official snow total from the Louisville International airport is running above average. So far this month we’ve had 5.6 inches with 11.4 inches for the season. We’ll likely add more to that later tonight and early tomorrow.
