WEATHER FORECAST: Lion or lamb, March will be cold

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Will March come in like a lion or a lamb? Regardless of which, they’ll both be cold. Temperatures this past week have averaged well below normal and that trend will continue into the first of March. Add insult to injury and throw in a winter storm for the upcoming weekend. It’s made headlines this week with a focus for rain, ice and snow by the end of the weekend into early next week.

Let’s start with Friday ... After a cold start in the teens some morning sunshine will warm us into the 40s. Saturday looks mild with highs pushing 50 degrees as clouds increase. Rain chances go up Saturday into Sunday. A cold front arrives Sunday. Rain at the onset will transition to freezing rain and sleet as a shallow layer of cold air undercuts the warmer temperatures aloft. It appears any icing potential during the day on Sunday would be limited to portions of central Indiana, perhaps as close to us as Seymour, Bedford and North Vernon.

As the colder air moves in from the north southern Indiana will see the transition from rain to freezing rain and sleet during the late afternoon and. The amounts remain tough to pinpoint, but it’s worth watching as an accumulating amount of ice isn’t out of the question. As the system move out the depth of the cold air will support light snow on Monday.
