Green space near new tech school in Clarksville to be ‘gathering place’

Construction to begin in April

CLARKSVILLE — A green space for Clarksville residents to gather for special events is within sight along Eastern Boulevard.

A construction bid for four acres of irrigated green space, along with a 700 to 800-foot road and an adjacent parking lot, was unanimously approved at a special Clarksville redevelopment commission meeting Thursday. The winning bid is with MAC Construction for $1.06 million.

“We see this as a good potential place for things like that where we can utilize all this parking area,” Redevelopment Director Nick Lawrence said. The lot should have more than 100 spots.

The road will run parallel with Eastern Boulevard and connect Little League Boulevard to the Clarksville Little League Ballpark, essentially running in front of the former Value City building that soon will house Renaissance Academy, a new tech high school.

Lawrence said he thinks the new green space that he and other redevelopment board members are calling a park will take the space to a whole new level.

“It’s kind of the next phase of life of this area, and this will give it some finish,” he said. “We really think it’s more than anything going to soften it up and provide us with a center gathering place.”

Vice President of the Redevelopment Commission Bob Polston said he thinks the park will also benefit the new school, which should finish construction by August in time for school to start.

“We want to make this add to the school area. We want them to work hand-in-hand,” Polston said. “When we get it done, the kids can come out and enjoy the springtime.”

Construction on the roads, parking lot and green space will begin April 1 and finish by mid-July.
