Deadline for ram exam nears

Producers face many hurdles when breeding sheep, but preventing the use of an infertile ram or ram with decreased fertility can be accomplished through a breeding soundness exam.

Extension research has shown that removing an infertile ram from the flock can increase profits by $10 to 12 per ewe by decreasing the ram-to-ewe ratio, decreasing the percent of open ewes and increasing the percent lamb crop.

A ram breeding soundness exam clinic is scheduled for Monday, July 8, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Salem, beginning at 8 a.m. Rams must be at least 8 months old. The cost is $30 per ram and each will be insured at market value from the time they leave the farm until they return.

For more information, or to schedule your ram(s), contact the Purdue Extension — Washington County office by Monday, July 1 at 806 Martinsburg Road, Suite 104 in Salem, 812-883-4601 or
