Five arrested in New Albany on drug charges

Substance found by police believed to be heroin

NEW ALBANY — Five people were arrested by New Albany police officers last week on drug charges including possession of a controlled substance, possession of a syringe and maintaining a common nuisance — all class D felonies.

According to probable cause affidavits, NAPD officers executed a search warrant on June 1 at 3214 Hickory Grove.

A search of the residence by police led to the discovery of nine hypodermic needles, four spoons containing burnt residue, a partially smoked marijuana cigarette, four pills later determined to be Hydromorphone, two and one-half pills tested to be Alprazolam, and another needle containing a brown fluid believed to be heroin, according to the affidavits.

Robert C. Pullen, 42 of New Albany, Joann R. Smith, 27 of Louisville, Kasi M. Ballew, 22 of New Albany, Donald R. Johnson, 32 of Sellersburg and Joshua E. Carroll, 27, were all arrested on various charges including possession of a syringe.

According to the affidavits, Johnson and Smith admitted to using heroin about two hours before the officers arrived at the residence. The affidavit states they showed “visible signs of intravenous drug usage on their arms.”

Pullen told police that his parents owned the property, and that he’d lived there for about four years, according to the affidavit.

Carroll and Ballew said they’d been staying at the home for about four months, the affidavit states. Johnson, Pullen and Smith were found in the basement of the residence, where according to the affidavit, was where the pills and needles were located.
