Prosecutors, police await toxicology reports in Harrison County man’s death

Ramsey homicide investigation ongoing

HARRISON COUNTY — While Harrison County prosecutors say they know who shot Joe Johnson in a Ramsey home May 2o, no arrest has been made.

Harrison County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Nicholas Haverstock said Thursday that the investigating agency, Indiana State Police Sellersburg post, has not handed in its final report on the incident. Haverstock said his office believes the shooter was Kristy Thevenot, 41, who was in a relationship with Johnson, 35, and had a protective order against him following a previous domestic incident.

He said ISP is waiting to receive Johnson’s toxicology results and other materials being tested before completing its report.

Haverstock took time to iterate that the case is currently a homicide investigation and not a murder investigation.

“There could be a justified reason behind the shooting,” he said.

He said his office will make the decision whether or not to charge Thevenot within a week after receiving the ISP’s completed investigative report.

Johnson was pronounced dead in his girlfriend’s home at 1365 Ind. 64. about 9:30 a.m. May 20 after ISP responded to a 911 call. The woman was found on the front porch of the home when authorities arrived.

ISP previously reported that Johnson is believed to have been shot during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

An autopsy was completed the day after the shooting at the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office. The preliminary autopsy results determined Johnson died from a single gunshot wound from a handgun to the chest area, ISP has reported.
