68 DOGS RESCUED: NA-FC Shelter takes in canines from Kentucky

NEW ALBANY — Almost 70 dogs were taken by the New Albany-Floyd County Animal Shelter from a home near Paducah Ky., on Friday.

Theresa Stilger, animal care coordinator with the shelter, said 68 dogs were taken from an “overwhelmed breeder situation.” Most were Chihuahuas, but Chinese crested dogs and others were also taken from the home, she said.

Stilger said while other shelters were nearby, New Albany-Floyd County was better equipped with their Pets Are Worth Saving Unit — a trailer with cages, a sink and other animal transportation needs — and their ability to contact other agencies to take some of the animals.

“We are one of the few organizations locally that has a vehicle where we can rescue a large number of animals,” Stilger said. “We have really good working relationships with other rescue agencies in Indiana and Kentucky, so no one group has to take all of the burden.”

She said agencies in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan have agreed to take some of the dogs. By the time they’re transported, she said she expects her shelter to end up with about 10 to 15 of them.

David Hall, director of the shelter, said he was alerted to the situation through his contacts with the Humane Society of the United States, which also provided a grant to help house, provide medical care and evaluations of the dogs.

He said the dogs were in various states, from flea infestation and living in filth to relatively good shape.

Hall said the owners of the dogs gave them up in lieu of facing charges.
