Malysz accepts development post in Columbus

Long-time New Albany official was fired in February

NEW ALBANY — Former New Albany Deputy Mayor Carl Malysz has been hired by the city of Columbus as Director of Community Development.

Malysz served as deputy mayor under former New Albany Mayor Doug England from 2008 to 2011, but was demoted to the role of director of community housing initiatives  by current Mayor Jeff Gahan.

Malysz was fired by Gahan in February, though the administration never provided an official reason for his termination.

According to a press release issued by the city, Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown appointed Malysz to his new position on Monday.

Similar to what he was working on in New Albany before he was let go, Malysz will be charged with developing a comprehensive housing strategy for Columbus, according to the press release.

“Carl brings a wealth of community development experience to Columbus,” Brown stated in the news release.

“He is eminently qualified to lead and advance our department of community development.”

Malysz wasn’t immediately available for comment as of press time on Wednesday.

“Having been a resident of Indiana for more than 30 years, I have always been enamored with the city of Columbus because of its architectural treasures,” Malysz stated in the city’s press release.

“I look forward to working with all of the community’s public and private organizations to advance our safe and affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization efforts and collectively making our city a better place to live for all residents.”

According to the press release, Malysz and his wife, Sheila, are in the process of relocating from New Albany to Columbus.

However the Malysz-Norwood Daycare co-owned by Sheila will continue to operate at its 1707 Klerner Lane location in New Albany.
