Fuel spill makes for slippery street in Jeffersonville

I-65, U.S. 31 temporarily shut down

JEFFERSONVILLE — Authorities aren’t sure what caused a diesel fuel leak that shut down an Interstate 65 exit ramp to northbound U.S. 31 for about an hour Wednesday afternoon.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said a semi-truck ruptured one of its diesel fuel tanks as it was traveling northbound on I-65 across the Kennedy Bridge. He did not know what caused the truck’s tank to rupture.

The semi truck pulled off I-65 at exit 1, which connects to northbound U.S. 31.

As a result of the fuel spill police temporarily shut down exit 1 and the 10th Street entrance ramp to northbound U.S. 31 and I-65. Goodin explained that fuel on the roadway makes it very slick, which is why the roadway was temporarily shut down. Crews were able to dump sand on the spilled fuel and it will dissipate as the sun comes out, Goodin said.
