Jeffersonville homeless task force granted funding

Matching money requested from city council

JEFFERSONVILLE — The initial stages of a 10-year plan to end homelessness were funded Wednesday night.

Jeffersonville’s Redevelopment Commission approved a $15,000 request from a homeless task force established by Mayor Mike Moore earlier this year. The funding will be used to hire an independent consultant to work with the task force and other stakeholders to develop a 10-year strategic plan to address the homelessness issue in Jeffersonville, according to a press release. The objective is to make recommendations about strengthening the continuum of care that exist and explore other resources.

“I established the task force to take politics out of the homelessness issue,” Moore said in the release. “Government isn’t the solution, but we can help bridge everyone together to find ways to make our community more receptive to the issues facing the unfortunate in our city. Much of our economic success in our downtown depends on how we approach the homelessness issue over the next few years.”

He added the first step is to formulate the long-term plan.

In addition to the $15,000 dedicated from the redevelopment commission, the task force is also seeking $15,000 from the Jeffersonville City Council at its meeting Monday. It begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

“I encourage the city council in joining me and the redevelopment commission in supporting the task force in their endeavor,” Moore said in the release. “We must have a coherent community strategy to end homelessness and not just a Band-Aid approach.”
