AARP meeting today

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees will host its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. today, March 11, at the American Red Cross Building, 1805 E. Eight St., Jeffersonville.

It is PAC month so the group will be collection contributions for the 2014 campaign fund.

Ministry holds first-ever event

Hand in Hand Ministries will host its first-ever Legacy Luncheon on Tuesday, March 18. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 12 p.m. and ending promptly at 1 p.m., at Kye’s II, 500 Missouri Ave., Jeffersonville.

While the event is free, attendees will be asked for a donation. WAVE-3 news anchor Dawne Gee will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event. This marks the first time Hand in Hand has ever held a lunchtime fundraiser, and also is the first time Hand in Hand has held an event in Southern Indiana.

Louisville-based Hand in Hand takes groups on trips to build homes in Belize, work with children in Nicaragua and provide much-needed home repairs in Auxier, Ky. With staff at each location, Hand in Hand’s work continues year-round to improve the lives of those they serve.

Legacy events are free and open to the public, and a great opportunity to learn more about Hand in Hand’s dynamic ministry.

Hand in Hand will also showcase a film about our work in Nicaragua that will inspire you to renew your passport.

Let your garden grow

Enjoy gardening but don’t have the space? Interested in being part of a community garden? Urban Fusion Community Garden on Culbertson Avenue near Eighth Street in New Albany has several raised beds available for this growing season. You can work along with other gardeners and learn more about gardening while growing your own produce or flowers.

Hosparus seeks volunteers

Hosparus Southern Indiana needs patient support volunteers in Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties and will host a free training at its new location in New Albany, 502 Hausfeldt Lane, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 22. Lunch will be provided.

Volunteers help with patient and family support, administrative duties and development/fundraising. Hosparus carefully selects volunteers and provides them with comprehensive training specially designed to meet the needs of patients and families. Hosparus volunteers must have available transportation and complete training and an application process.

Header to the Y for soccer

The YMCA of Southern Indiana is now registering boys and girls for youth soccer.

The Y is committed to teaching youth soccer skills and to encouraging each youth to develop these skills in their individual interest and ability levels. The Y’s desire is that, through youth soccer, youth will find a lifelong love for healthy activity and find ways to strengthen values, improve relationships, appreciate diversity, develop leadership skills and have fun.

Youth soccer is open to boys and girls ages 3-11. Registration ends on Sunday, March 16 and games will be played on Saturdays, April 19 through June 7. The fees for members are $50 for 3-year-olds and $65 for ages 4-11. The fees for participants are $60 for 3-year-olds and $80 for ages 4-11.

Annual coon supper March 15

The Owen Township Homemakers Club will host its 62nd coon supper beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Hibernia Community Building in Clark County, 5815 Blue Ridge Road.

Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. There will be a drawing for a quilt. Tickets are $1 or six for $5. Winners do not have to be present to win.

All proceeds from the supper and the drawing will go to the upkeep of the building.
