Fire damages longstanding Jeff restaurant

Damage limited to kitchen, but costly repairs make future of Jerry’s Restaurant uncertain

JEFFERSONVILLE — A Thursday morning fire has at least temporarily closed a longstanding Jeffersonville restaurant.

According to Jeffersonville Fire Marshall Travis Sharp, the Jeffersonville Fire Department responded to a fire at Jerry’s Restaurant on 10th Street at 2:09 a.m. Thursday.

Sharp said fire crews were able to quickly get the fire under control and damage was limited to the kitchen, where the fire is believed to have started.

“They were able to control it,” he said of the fire. “The building is salvageable.”

However, the kitchen did receive extensive damage and is expected to keep the local business closed for some time.

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore is the former owner of the restaurant, and still owns the property. The restaurant was taken over and was being operated by Mike Shartzer, who formerly owned and operated Mike and Matt’s.

Moore said he does not know if or when the restaurant will reopen.

He estimated the damage in the kitchen area of Jerry’s at no less than $200,000 and added that it is his understanding the insurance policy that was on the facility was canceled by Shartzer in February.

“I’m going to do everything I can to fix the restaurant up, but without insurance coverage ... it’s going to be difficult,” Moore said.

Moore said it is an especially difficult prospect for the restaurant’s employees who will be out of work for an unknown period of time and that it would be difficult to see the restaurant, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary this month, close.

Sharp said an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.

Messages left with Shartzer were not returned as of press time.
