Off to see the Wizard: Providence’s show opens Sunday

CLARKSVILLE —

If they catch the show this weekend, audiences at Our Lady of Providence High School may just believe they’re not in Indiana anymore.

For the first time since 1989, “The Wizard of Oz” will return to the school’s stage on Sunday.

Ellen Holifield, director of the school’s theater department, said the charm of the film and elements from it will feel familiar to the audience.

“I think we were pretty successful with being able to incorporate some of the film with it so people still get that feeling they got when they saw the movie for the first time,” Holifield said.

Along with scenery and characters families have recognized for decades, Roxy will play Toto, the first live animal to grace Providence’s stage in at least 12 years.

Daniel Fernandez, a senior, plays the Tin Man. He said at least one element will be new for show goers.

“I like some of the changes in the musical numbers,” Fernandez said. “The Jitterbug, which was cut from the film, has a nice jazzy feel to it.”

Other parts of the show, though, aren’t alien territory for the audience, Fernandez said, adding that he hopes people will come out to see Providence’s own spin on the family favorite.

“I always like a challenge,” Fernandez said. “It’s well-known, but at the same time, you feel like you’re creating your own version of the characters.”

The show opens Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 812-945-2538.
