Man killed after vehicle hit by train

Collision in Harrison County closed Ind. 64 Tuesday afternoon

RAMSEY —

A man was killed Tuesday afternoon after his vehicle was struck by a passing train in Ramsey, Indiana State Police said.

The collision occurred about 2 p.m. on Ind. 64 near North Harrison High School, a trooper reported.

The driver’s name had not been released as of 5:30 p.m., but ISP troopers said he was around 50 and worked at a local water company, for which he was on the job, WLKY-TV in Louisville reported.

The intersection does not have flashing lights or a crossing arm, but police said the man stopped at the stop sign before trying to cross. That’s when his utility truck was hit by the train heading west on the tracks, according to WLKY.

“Based upon witness statements, the driver stopped at the stop sign, completely stopped, looked both ways and proceeded out onto the track,” Trooper Chris Tucker told WLKY. “It’s believed the driver did not see the train coming. That’s what we we’re told. The train was using its horns. Its bells and whistles were all working properly. So, it’s believed he did not see the train.”

The road was shut down for about 21⁄2 hours Tuesday afternoon.
