Updated road closures related to bridges work released

Officials with the Ohio River Bridges Project want to ensure those racing for a good cause are aware of the construction in downtown Louisville.

Thousands of people are expected to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Louisville Slugger Field in downtown Louisville today, Oct. 12.

Participants will encounter traffic restrictions and construction equipment near and along parts of the race route. Witherspoon Street, which has been closed this week from Adams Street to River Road for pile driving, will be open during the event. Some construction equipment will remain adjacent to the race course; therefore, parking lanes along Witherspoon will remain closed Saturday. Witherspoon Street will close again after the race.

The intersection of Preston Street and Jefferson Street is expected to be closed this weekend for work in the area and a section of the parking lot at Louisville Slugger Field remains closed for work to widen Interstate 65. Race participants should be prepared for possible delays and arrive early.

I-64 LANES TO CLOSE

Starting Monday, Oct. 14, lanes will be closed periodically on the Interstate 64 Sherman Minton Bridge. Lane closures will take place periodically for bridge maintenance and inspections.

All lanes will be opened when traffic is the heaviest, according to an Indiana Department of Transportation news release.

All eastbound lanes will be reopened by 7 a.m. each weekday for the morning rush into Louisville. All westbound lanes will be reopened between 4 and 8 p.m. for the Friday evening rush.

To minimize inconvenience to the motoring public, the regularly scheduled bridge inspection will immediately follow the bridge maintenance work. The inspections must occur during daylight hours, while maintenance work can take place at all hours. Maintenance contractors may close up to two lanes at night, allowing access to the center lane in each direction.

The scope of the bridge maintenance work includes asphalt joint replacement, stringer repairs (longitudinal beams that run parallel to traffic), limited fastener replacement, bridge drainage system repairs and slopewall repairs.

Indiana and Kentucky are splitting cost for Sherman Minton Bridge maintenance over the Ohio River, and Indiana is responsible for the approach spans over the Indiana shoreline.

INDOT estimates that the maintenance and inspections will be completed before the Thanksgiving travel holiday.
