Center Stage: Floyd Central's theater program nabs national recognition

Stage Directions Magazine names Floyd Central as best theater school in Midwest

FLOYDS KNOBS — Their fans come from all over the region as do their awards, but now a national magazine has given props to Floyd Central High School’s theater program.

Stage Directions Magazine, a premier trade publication for technical theater, named Floyd Central as the best theater school in the Midwest.

Director Robbie Steiner said he’s thrilled to see the program earn the recognition.

“I was really excited just thinking about all the people that have put so much hard work into building this program, the parents, the students, the teachers administrators,” Steiner said. “It’s really nice to see all that hard work recognized.”

Though it’s Steiner’s first year at the helm of the program, he’s helped out alongside former director Chris Bundy since 2011. The magazine recognized the school’s prowess in the technical side of theater, including lighting and sound.

Students participate all facets of the productions, but many specialize on the tech side offstage.

Steiner said though the years of quality work by students has certainly taken the lead in why the school was recognized, he said this year’s ambitious production of “Les Miserables” may have also caught the eye of the publication.

Whatever the reasons, Steiner said he thinks it proves that what Floyd Central is doing in theater is what it needs to keep doing.

“For me, it just encourages me to continue moving in the direction we’re headed,” Steiner said. “We continue to look at the other schools out there getting recognition and seeing how they got there, so we continue to build on that.”
