Jeffersonville accepting card payments for sewer bills

Residents can pay online starting March 1

JEFFERSONVILLE — Residents soon will have a much easier time paying dues to the city.

Starting March 1, sewer bills can be paid online or by phone using a credit card or e-check.

“I think it’s time for us to get to the 21st century,” said Elisha Dale, utility billing manager for Jeffersonville Wastewater Department.

Payments can either be made on the city’s website, cityofjeff.net, or by calling a 1-800 number that has not yet been set up. This new method is made available through a partnership between the city and Heartland Payment Systems.

Bills paid with a credit card will have a $2.29 processing fee added, a number that is low compared to many other payment services, Dale said. Other city departments are piggybacking off of this method, including the building commissioner and the city clerk.

Before, residents would have to use cash, check or money order only, a system that was “very antique,” Dale said.

A lot of people wouldn’t have the ability to pay using those methods and would end up reaching delinquency status on their accounts, which is what prompted a change.
