More winter weather expected Sunday

Kevin Harned says the worst of the weather will happen starting late in the afternoon

INDIANAPOLIS — Southern Indiana and Louisville appear headed with another date with a grumpy Old Man Winter on Sunday.

A winter storm watch has been issued from 7 a.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday by the National Weather Service. It’s a watch that likely will soon be updated to a warning, according to Kevin Harned, chief meteorologist at WAVE 3 News.

Harned said on WAVE 3’s website that “the worst of the weather will occur late Sunday afternoon and evening and into early Monday morning.”

“The precipitation type will be tough to nail down,” Harned said. “However, all guidance points to a significant winter storm in the Ohio Valley.”

Harned said it could be the worst winter storm of the season, and the area is likely to see all types of precipitation — rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow.

The NWS also said that there is uncertainty of what type of precipitation would fall and for how long, but that “mostly snow” was likely in Southern Indiana, while ice and sleet were likely across Central Kentucky.
