JEFFERSONVILLE — A 27-year-old man was taken to University of Louisville Hospital after being shot in a Jeffersonville apartment complex Tuesday night.

Police say the victim, whose name they are currently not releasing, remains in critical condition.

The shooting took place about 11 p.m. at Las Casitas Apartments on Village Green Boulevard, located near Middle Road, police said. Jeffersonville Police Department Detective Todd Hollis said Wednesday the shooter, a 43-year-old man, was taken into police custody, but has not been charged or arrested.

Hollis declined to disclose the name of the shooter.

“We are investigating the possibility of self-defense,” Hollis said.

He said the man who was shot and the shooter both live on the same floor of the same building at 1914 Village Green Blvd. The man was shot once in the torso area, Hollis said, adding that multiple shots were fired during the incident.

Hollis said the shooting was the result of a confrontation between two families that had escalated throughout the day.

Police could not confirm if the shooting took place inside or outside of the apartment building. Hollis said the investigation is continuing and officers are reconstructing the scene to determine where the shots were fired.

Police have recovered the handgun fired during the incident. The shooter was taken into custody at the scene and transported to JPD for questioning, where he remained late Wednesday morning.

Hollis said the man has admitted to shooting the victim. He could not say if preliminary charges will be issued before the case is handed over to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office.
