Classically modern: Floyd Central presents ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’

FLOYDS KNOBS — Tapdancing numbers and flashy flapper dresses will bring a Roaring ’20s vibe to Floyd Central High School’s stage, starting tonight.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” opens at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Robbie Steiner, theater director, said the prohibition-age story of a country girl who wants to marry into big money brings big-band music and comedy to the stage.

He said though the production bumped very closely into the schedule of the school’s last show, students have transitioned from one production to another pretty smoothly.

“We’ve got a really strong group of students,” Steiner said. “It has been challenging with the time constraints; we’ve been going right from ‘Godspell’ into ‘Millie,’ and the students have really risen to the occasion.”

But he also said someone familiar with theater in New Albany-Floyd County schools will take the helm for some of the showings of the play. Tyler Bliss, a graduate of New Albany High School and the executive director of the New Albany-Floyd County Education Foundation, is a guest director for some of the productions.

Bliss has performed in several shows around the area. His wife, Megan, choreographed “Millie.”

Steiner said he thinks it’s good for students to get a look at people who have come from the programs and continue to incorporate theater into their lives.

“I think it’s a great inspiration to our students to see how theater can really be something we take with us throughout our lifetime and Tyler is a great example of that,” Steiner said. “He has a day job as the director of the foundation, but he has a very successful career on the side of doing theater here locally. I think it’s important to see that success.”

Marina Hart, a senior who plays Millie, said she thinks Floyd Central’s production has a little something for every audience.
