Pence signs Grooms’ immunization bill

SALEM —

State Sen. Ron Grooms, R-Jeffersonville, joined Gov. Mike Pence at DanMar Family Pharmacy in Salem on Wednesday for the signing of Grooms’ legislation enabling pharmacists to administer more types of immunizations.

House Enrolled Act 1464 gives pharmacists the authority to administer six new immunizations: pneumonia (for individuals at least 65 years of age), tetanus, diphtheria, meningitis, acellular pertussis (Tdap) and human papillomavirus (HPV). Grooms said in a news release that this initiative gives Hoosiers the flexibility to visit a local pharmacy for physician-ordered immunizations while ensuring that all procedures are carried out under strong standards and protocol.

“Because of my background in pharmacy for more than 45 years, I know this new law will provide Hoosiers with affordable immunization options,” he said in the release. “As demand for medical care rises, it’s important we do all we can to give Hoosiers more choices for high-quality care and medical professionals more flexibility to provide needed services. It was an honor to have Gov. Pence’s strong support on this initiative, and a pleasure to meet the owners of DanMar Pharmacy, who will have more to offer their community thanks to this new law.”

Grooms advanced several other bills this session to promote public health, including House Enrolled Act 1099 to allow physicians’ assistants in Indiana to provide additional medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician and Senate Bill 246 to provide oversight for prescribers of controlled substances.
