Clarksville Police respond to domestic dispute

Man charged in strangulation, battery

CLARKSVILLE — An argument between two residents of a Clarksville home Tuesday resulted in a man being jailed on battery charges.

Joshua Johnson, 38, of 204 N. Marshall Ave. No. 5, has been charged with felony strangulation and several misdemeanors.

Clarksville police responded to the area of Johnson’s home, after a neighbor had reported a domestic disturbance involving Johnson and a woman.

Police located Johnson and the woman, and reported the two were standing in the doorway of their apartment building in an apparent verbal altercation.

The woman told police that she had arrived home earlier in the day and Johnson had become “verbally irate and began yelling at her, asking her where she had been and why she had gotten home so late,” according to the affidavit.

She also became upset because many of her belongings had been placed in suitcases and set in the mutual hallway of the apartment complex, the woman told police.

She said that Johnson wanted her out of the home, but her name is on the lease and that she was not going anywhere, police reported.

“[The woman] reported that they continued arguing out in the hallway, and at some point the door had become locked with both of them standing in the hallway,” according to the affidavit.

She told police she attempted to use her key to unlock the door, but Johnson had pushed her out of  the way. He then used a small pocket knife in an attempt to pick the lock, the woman told police.

She stated that she tried to push him away from the door, “ ... and at that point she stated Johnson used his left hand and grabbed her by the throat in a choking manner, still holding the knife,” according to the affidavit.

The altercation continued and the woman again tried to push Johnson, and hit her hand on the open knife blade causing a cut to her hand.

Police took photographs of the woman’s neck, but due to her complexion at the time, bruising was not visible, police reported.

Johnson admitted to police that he had taken out a knife to pick the lock of the door.

He has been charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 3 with strangulation, a class D felony, domestic battery, a class A misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor.

Online court records had not been updated with Johnson’s next court appearance as of press time.
