Shoplifting call turns to high-speed chase in Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE — A Louisville woman  found shoplifting at Walmart along Veteran’s Parkway sent police on a high-speed pursuit before she was taken into custody Tuesday, officials reported.

Erin R. Duerson, 20, was reported by Walmart loss prevention officials as walking around the store, opening merchandise and concealing the items in her purse.

She was then seen, loss prevention reported, proceeding to the self-checkout area and paying for some merchandise, while disregarding the concealed goods in her purse.

After checking out, Duerson left the store, according to loss prevention.

Two of loss prevention officials exited the store, apprehended Duerson and escorted her back into the store.

“[Duerson] complied at first, and then ran into the front women’s restroom where she began attempting to flush the stolen merchandise down the toilet,” loss prevention reported.

The store’s security then contacted the Clarksville Police Department.

Duerson then exited the restroom and the store, while ignoring the commands of loss prevention officials.

While Clarksville police officers were en route, they were told that Duerson was attempting to leave the Walmart parking lot in a green Oldsmobile.

When the officers arrived, they reported seeing loss prevention officials running across the parking lot and the Oldsmobile driving through the lot at about 30 to 40 mph while disregarding other vehicles in the area.

The Oldsmobile then left the Walmart property by making an illegal turn onto Veteran’s Parkway, nearly causing an accident, police reported.

Duerson continued to drive the vehicle at a high rate of speed, but was met by police on an Interstate 65 ramp.

The tailing officer turned on the patrol car’s emergency lights, but Duerson did not stop.

“After driving around a mile down I-65 and switching lanes numerous times at a high rate of speed, the vehicle suddenly began to slow down and pulled off to the shoulder of the road,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

Duerson was arrested during the traffic stop.

Police reported her sister, 12, and son, 4, were also in the vehicle.

Duerson has been charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 3 with attempted theft, resisting law enforcement and neglect of a dependent, all class D felonies, and reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor.
