Floyd County launching park of the month program

FLOYD COUNTY —  Campbell-Woodland Nature Trails is the newest county parks facility, and as the latest to open, there are likely many in the public who don’t know much about “the bird watcher’s paradise.”

Thus it was a natural selection for the Floyd County Parks Department to choose Campbell-Woodland as its inaugural centerpiece for its park of the month project which will begin in July.

Located in the 3300 block of Budd Road, the facility includes a one-third mile walking path, benches and a covered gazebo.

Creeks, a waterfall and foot bridges are other features of Campell-Woodland, which opened last July.

Launching the park of the month program will hopefully bring more attention to public facilities such as Campbell-Woodland, Parks Director Roger Jeffers said.

“There’s a lot of amenities some people might not realize are available even for the parks that have been around for some time,” Jeffers said.

The featured park of the month will be highlighted on the department’s website. Information about the park will also be displayed at other parks and county facilities.

The idea was suggested by staff members including Sue Crispin, who is the office manager and public outreach coordinator for the parks department.

“We just decided we were going to do a featured park of the month to promote our parks and to get the word out,” she said.

The start of the program also coincides with National Recreation and Park Association’s Park Month, which is in July.

Garry E. Cavan Park in will be the August park of the month.

“It’s just neat that the staff are finding ways to get people interested in parks,” Jeffers said.
