Support group meetings held

The local chapter of Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance has weekly support group meetings on Monday nights between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Clark Memorial Hospital, 1220 Missouri Ave., Jeffersonville.

The meetings are held in room 1941 on Hallway 1 North. If you wish to attend and you are not familiar with the layout of the hospital please email Maureen Fifer for directions from the main entrance of the hospital to the meeting room.

Weight loss program Thursday

Clark Memorial Hospital Bariatric Weight Loss Program is hosting a free weight loss seminar at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 13, in the Kathryn Raines Education and Conference Center in the hospital, 1220 Missouri Ave., Jeffersonville.

Dr. Daniel MacMillan and Dr. Patri Marconi, of Surgical Associates Southern Indiana, will present information on obesity and the laparoscopic weight loss procedure offered at Clark Memorial Hospital. Registered nurse Carolyn McKee, program coordinator, will discuss how a comprehensive post-procedure follow-up program benefits weight loss patients and basic insurance information and guidelines.

Prom Aid on the way

The seventh-annual Prom Aid, sponsored by the Clark County 4-H Junior Leaders, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. March 15 and 1 to 4 p.m. March 16 in the Community Building at the Clark County 4-H Fairgrounds, located at 9608 Ind. 62, Charlestown.

The collection of dresses and suits will be given away to any high school student from Clark, Floyd or neighboring counties. Nu Yale Cleaners has again agreed to clean the clothing for the giveaway.

Fundraiser for fire victims

A fundraising event will be held March 13 for the victims of a New Albany fire that killed three children.

From 4 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 10 percent of food sales at Texas Roadhouse, 757 Lewis & Clark Pkwy., will benefit the Hughes family. In January, a fire in a home on Ealy Street killed Trinity Hughes, 2, Tyrese Hughes, 4, and Tai’zah Hughes, 6.  Taty’ana Hughes, 5, survived the fire and is recovering from her injuries.

Funds will help pay for funeral expenses, as well as medical expenses for Taty’ana. Those unable to attend may make donations to T-angels at any Fifth Third Bank location.

Test your soup skills

The Food for Thought Cookbook Group is sponsoring a soup/chili cook-off at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12.

Entrants should bring four quarts of heated soup in a slow cooker to the Strassweg Auditorium. Judging will begin at 6:45 p.m. Bring a recipe for the soup to share with the other attendees.

Three prizes will be awarded: First and second place as selected by the judges and best soup and best chili as selected by the attendees. Everyone is invited to sample and vote for the best soup and chili. Registration is required for entrants only. All others should just come and enjoy.

Friends book sale March 15

The Friends of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library will host a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the library’s Annex Building, at the corner of Scribner Drive and Spring Street.

Two free books to all patrons wearing green, and there will be a big display of Irish books.  Regular prices are $1 for hardbacks; 50 cents for videos, DVDs and paperbacks; 25 cents for audio book cassette tapes; and 10 cents for magazines and music cassette tapes.  Children’s books are available at prices of $1 or less.


Spaghetti for prom

The North Harrison After Prom Committee is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, March 16, at the North Harrison Middle School Cafeteria, 1070 Highway 64 NW, Ramsey.

Spaghetti with homemade meat sauce and marinara sauce will be served along with a fresh garden salad, garlic bread and homemade desserts. The meal will be a free will donation.

Local churches and others will be donating themed baskets for a silent auction. Bids will be taken throughout the dinner and the winner of the baskets will be announced at 1:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the dinner and auction will go to benefit the North Harrison High School After Prom.

Program applications accepted

U.S. Rep. Todd Young, R-Ind., announced that the 9th District Congressional offices are accepting applications for the 9th District’s Congressional Leadership Program.

The Congressional Leadership Program [CLP], which was developed and launched by Young’s staff in 2012, introduces college and graduate students to their region and develops their leadership skills so they can effectively serve their community.

Applicants should be residents of, or attending college or graduate school in, the 9th Congressional District. CLP class size is limited, so the application process is competitive. Priority consideration will be given to those who apply by March 15. Applicants must attend at least four out of five sessions to successfully complete the program.
