Jeffersonville sewer billing office collecting more than $800,000 in overdue bills

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville’s sewer billing office is trying to collect more than $800,000 in overdue bills for sewer service.

Utility Billing Manager Elisha Dale said 3,000 letters were sent out Friday, June 28, to residents that are more than 90 days overdue on their sewer bills. She warned the Sewer Board that it will likely need to write-off portions of the $811,916 still owed to the city because some of the homeowners that have past due bills are unable to be located.

But so far, the number of residents the billing office has been unable to locate has been minimal.

Dale said only 15 people have not been found that have overdue bills, and the majority of folks the billing office has been unable to locate have moved out of the state and their forwarding order for mail has expired.

“We’re going to get a response, a lot of people have been coming in and paying,” she said.

BIDS ARE IN

Bids for the Wathen Heights Cherokee Terrace sewer project have come in and the low bidder is the same contractor that has been awarded two other sewer projects for the annexed areas in Jeffersonville.

Josh Hillman, engineer with Jacobi, Toombs and Lanz, Inc. said that Dan Cristiani Excavating, Inc. was low bidder for the sewer project to extend sewer service to Wathen Heights and Cherokee Terrace at a total cost of $2.4 million. Hillman added that Cristiani has also worked on two previous projects in the area.

No bid was officially accepted, the bids will be reviewed and an approval is expected at an upcoming sewer board meeting.

Work on the sewer project is expected to get underway before the end of the year.
