Cutting to the chase: Grass and weed season begins in New Albany on May 1

NEW ALBANY —

City officials are giving land owners whose properties are out of compliance with grass and weed regulations an advance warning that violations could soon be issued.

May 1 starts the official grass- and weed-cutting season for the city of New Albany, and code enforcement officers have been notifying property owners about potential violations.

“By beginning the notifications a couple weeks before the season begins, it gives property owners some extra time to alleviate any nuisances if they are out of compliance,” said Mary Dodge, New Albany code enforcement coordinator, in a news release this week.

If property owners don’t cut weeds and grass to municipal standards after being notified, the city cuts the lots and charges the land owner for the cost.

“We are encouraging neighbors and concerned citizens to call our grass and weed hotline to help keep our city in a condition that we can all be proud of,” said Building Commissioner David Brewer. “If a property in your neighborhood has become vacant or a blight, please let us know.”

Cleanliness as it pertains to weeds and overgrown lots was also a topic during Thursday’s New Albany City Council meeting. Councilwoman Diane McCartin-Benedetti suggested the city seek estimates on having a private landscaping company spray public rights of way with chemicals to remove weeds.

Keep New Albany Clean and Green has slated a beautification day for downtown Saturday, April 27, but Benedetti said if chemicals aren’t applied, weeds will simply grow back.

As it did last year, the New Albany Street Department will hire five part-time workers this summer to remove weeds and debris from public rights of way through funding appropriated by the council.

If you would like to report a violation, the city’s grass and weed hotline can be reached at 812-948-5309.
