Harrison County deputy wounds 2 inside car as it hits him

PAOLI — A Southern Indiana sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded two men just before their car struck him after a chase early Monday through parts of three counties, police said.

Harrison County Deputy Michael Andry was treated at a hospital for leg and back injuries, while a passenger in the car was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and the driver was being treated for hand wounds, state police said.

The chase started when Andry tried to stop the car for having a fictitious license plate about 2 a.m. in the town of Palmyra, about 25 miles northwest of Louisville, Ky.

The car fled on U.S. 150 through part of Washington County and into Orange County, where the driver turned onto county roads until running into a dead end in a rural area several miles south of Paoli, state police Sgt. Philip Hensley said.

Andry got out of his squad car and ordered the driver to stop, but he turned the car around and drove at the deputy, Hensley said. Andry then fired three shots into the car’s windshield moments before the car struck him and threw him onto the hood of his patrol car.

A state conservation officer who had joined Andry in the chase was able to block the car and arrest the people inside, Hensley said.

Charges were pending Monday against the 23-year-old driver from Leavenworth, the wounded 30-year-old passenger from Depauw and a 25-year-old Corydon woman who was in the car’s back seat and wasn’t injured.

Hensley said a backpack containing materials used to manufacture methamphetamine was found during a police search of the car.
