New Albany council to vote on homeless housing aid Thursday night

NEW ALBANY — The New Albany City Council will cast a final ballot on appropriating $50,000 in support of transitional housing for the homeless Thursday evening, Feb. 20.

Earlier this month, the body approved giving $25,000 to St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities and $25,000 to The Salvation Army in New Albany on initial ballots.

The appropriation was sponsored by Councilwoman Diane McCartin-Benedetti, as she said the funding is intended to help bridge the gap created by cuts in federal grants to the organizations.

The council is also slated to cast a final ballot on a $450,000 appropriation for 15 new police cars, however the vote has been delayed multiple times after being placed on the agenda.

The council approved the purchases on initial readings in December.

The only other item on the agenda is a tax abatement for Insulated Roofing Contractors.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the third-floor Assembly Room of the City-County Building.
