Strong winds expected ahead of storms

A wind advisory is in effect starting at 10 a.m. Thursday

LOUISVILLE — A wind advisory has been issued for Clark, Floyd and surrounding counties as a storm front is expected to move through the region Thursday evening.

The strongest winds are expected between 10 a.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Sustained winds of 20 mph to 30 mph are expected, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

“Soggy ground conditions from the recent warmth may result in trees being easily knocked down due to the high winds,” the advisory reads.

The NWS also cautions that tree limbs broken from recent ice and snow could become dislodged and fall with the winds.

A strong cold front is expected to move through the area Thursday evening and bring with it strong to severe thunderstorms. Damaging winds and brief heavy rainfall are the main concerns, the NWS said. Isolated tornadoes are also possible.
