Section of Blue River has second death in 2 days

MILLTOWN — Authorities say a 69-year-old man died after his canoe capsized on a southern Indiana river where a 16-year-old girl drowned while swimming nearby the day before.

State conservation officers say William Chappell of Boonville was canoeing with his wife on the Blue River near the Crawford County town of Milltown on Wednesday when they struck a partially submerged log and he became trapped underneath. Chappell was freed by his grandson, but he died after being taken to a Louisville hospital.

The canoe accident happened about a mile from where Alissa Knight of New Salisbury was swept away by the river’s current while trying to swim across. The North Harrison High School student’s body was found about a half mile downstream in the rural area about 30 miles northwest of Louisville.
