Pillar Awards presented to businesses, leaders

Feast BBQ, Rookies Cookies among the recipients

NEW ALBANY —

Develop New Albany continued its tradition of honoring area businesses and community-minded leaders Thursday, as the organization handed out its annual Pillar Awards during a ceremony at the Calumet Club.

The downtown businesses Colokial, Dress and Dwell, Rookies Cookies and Feast BBQ all received awards for their recent contributions to the downtown area.

Stefanie Griffith, co-owner of Strandz Salon and Threadz Boutique, received the Achievement Award, which is designated for individuals who have made a significant contribution to the downtown or uptown areas of New Albany.

Griffith organized the original First Tuesday Develop New Albany event, and is also planning a trolley “Hop and Shop” that will connect feature retail stops in midtown, downtown, and uptown.

Develop New Albany member David Barksdale presented the awards, and said that Griffith has “helped our organization grow to new heights”.

Griffith was also announced as the Develop New Albany vice president for 2013.

Colokial and Dress and Dwell both received a Horizon Award, which recognizes new or emerging businesses that have been open for five years or less.

The two boutiques are both located inside the historic United Gas and Electric building at 138 E. Spring St.

Rookies Cookies received the Foundation Award which honors establishments that have been in business for more than 10 years and have made a significant impact in the downtown area.

Rookies Cookies is located at 310 Pearl St.

The Renaissance Award recognizes businesses that have made a significant investment downtown, and the award for 2012 was given to Feast BBQ, which is located at 116 W. Main St.

Develop New Albany has presented Pillar Awards since 1999.

Board members for 2013 were also officially announced during the meeting, as new Develop New Albany President Joe LaRocca discussed some changes that have taken place.

The board has been bolstered from 12 members to 23, and will include four representatives from the city of New Albany.
