Board of Public Works addresses city road concerns

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville’s roads were the main focus of the Board of Public Works meeting Wednesday morning.

The board accepted the streets and traffic restrictions for a development nearing completion at the Village at Armstrong Farms. Mark Hammel with Dominion Homes presented the request for the community located off of Charlestown Pike.

In addition to the city taking over maintenance of the roadways in the subdivision, Hammel requested parking restrictions on one side of the road be enforced. He said a homeowners’ association in the subdivision agreed to the parking restriction. But city officials said once the roads are handed over, the restrictions are no longer up to the homeowners’ association.

“Once the city accepts the finished streets, then it will be the city’s responsibility to adopt traffic regulations,” said Corporation Attorney Tom Lowe.

The board agreed to accept the streets and road signs, except for the alleys for the subdivision.

SAME NAME

A concern was also brought up regarding streets in Jeffersonville that share the same name.

The street name referenced was Pennsylvania Avenue. One Pennsylvania Avenue exists near the Ken Ellis Center in downtown Jeffersonville and the other Pennsylvania Avenue is in Capitol Hills subdivision off of Middle Road.

Public Works Coordinator Rick Lovan, acknowledging the confusion around the street’s names, said he wanted to make sure a procedure is in place to address the duplication.

“Ken EIlis is a senior center and our concern is a fire [truck] or an ambulance is going to get called for someone at the senior center and they’re going to end up Capitol Hills,” said Parks Director Paul Northam.

The board agreed to have city planners, along with first responders, investigate other roads with the same name and bring a recommendation to a future meeting.

UTICA PIKE CLOSURES

Another set of road closures and detours for ongoing work along Utica Pike were approved by the board of public works.
