Police are continuing their search for a man suspected of shooting his wife in their Jeffersonville home early Thursday morning, police reported.
Fredrick W. Miller, 41, was last seen fleeing from the home on foot, after shooting his wife twice in the same leg as she held their 1-year-old child, Jeffersonville police detective Todd Hollis said. The wife’s name has not been released by authorities.
The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. in the family’s upstairs apartment of a quadraplex located at 813 Colonial Park Drive and Miller’s location was still unknown to area lawmen about noon Thursday. Miller’s wife is in stable condition at an area hospital, Hollis said.
JPD were still searching for Miller’s whereabouts at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Hollis said the couple’s 2- and 3-year-old children were also in the immediate area during the shooting. Police said the children have been moved to a secure location.
Miller’s wife was able to provide a statement to police after she was injured.
Hollis said the woman was attempting to escape the home with her children through a window after Miller had pointed a gun at his her.
Miller pulled her away from the window, Hollis said, at which time “the confrontation escalated and moved into the hallway” where Miller fired three bullets from a handgun. One of the bullets entered the apartment unit downstairs, which was occupied, but resulted in no injuries.
Hollis said Miller is believed to be in possession of the firearm he fired at his wife. He said the family’s vehicle is accounted for and not being driven by Miller. Hollis said Miller is from Louisville, but has resided in Jeffersonville for several years.
Police have responded to calls at the home at least once before, Hollis said. The detective couldn’t say what the nature of the call was, but said no arrest or investigation stemmed from the response.
Miller is a black man weighing 165 to 180 pounds and 5 feet 10 inches tall. Anyone with information of Miller’s whereabouts is asked to call Jeffersonville police at 812-283-6633. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the department’s tip line at 812-218-8477.
The incident was the second shooting in Clark County in three days. A woman was killed in Clarksville about 5 a.m. Monday after being shot in front of her boyfriend’s home. The alleged shooter was later arrested.
