Purdue seeks infants for child autism study

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue University scientists studying how autism develops in young children are seeking the infant siblings of autistic youngsters for a new study of the mysterious disorder.

The researchers are enrolling infants between six and 18 months of age who have an autistic sibling in their study.

For their research, each infant must visit Purdue’s Developmental Studies Laboratory every three to six months until each child is 2 1/2 years old. The youngsters will also have their physiological development, sleep regulation and language development assessed during home visits. Their parents will be compensated for their participation in the study.

Lead researcher A.J. Schwichtenberg says between 20 percent and 40 percent of the younger siblings of autistic children develop autism, which afflicts an estimated 1 in 88 children.
