Disc golf course opens at Garry Cavan Park

A stretch of grass at Garry Cavan Park looks like a short golf course from the scorecard. From the yellow “A” tees, the course plays 3,500 feet, and from the orange “B” tees, it plays 4,900.

But a Big Bertha driver or sand wedge will do you no good on this turf. Only endurance, a judge of distance and a quick snap of the wrist will pay dividends in disc golf.

The game is similar to golf, only the object is to throw a disc — many times a Frisbee — into the basket target. The holes are long and challenging.

Monday night was the official grand opening of the newest course in the area, located at Garry Cavan Park in Georgetown. But, the course has been in the works for more than a year.

“I’m very excited. I love seeing new stuff in the parks,” said Brent Harrison, athletic director for the New Albany-Floyd County Parks and Recreation Department. “This is something not readily available everywhere. Plus, it’s free and you don’t have to be skilled to play and have fun.”

The parks department used Steve Madgen to design the course. He did the same thing a few years ago at Buffalo Trace Park in Harrison County.

The course came about following the death of parks board member Leland “Butch” Lang’s son, who was an avid disc-golf player. Lang said people made donations to the parks foundation in his son’s name, and more than $10,000 was donated. That, along with a gift from Duke Energy, paid for the course.

“There are a few courses in Louisville, and it was in our master plan a few years ago,” Lang said. “When my son passed away, we asked in lieu of flowers that people make donations to the parks foundation. He enjoyed it (disc golf). He played courses in Louisville.”
