Midway opens Monday at Floyd County 4-H Fair

NEW ALBANY — A little bit of the new mixed with the traditional, the main events of the Floyd County 4-H Fair begin Monday.

The midway opens at 6 p.m, and check-ins for competitions start at 8 a.m. Monday.

Floyd County 4-H kids, volunteers and Purdue Extension Office workers have been preparing the fairgrounds for a week of activities including pony rides, livestock shows and baby contests.

“We really worked hard this year to do more family-focused events,” said Melissa Meridia, Floyd County 4-H Educator at the Purdue Extension Office.

4-H students submitted projects Wednesday for judging, and those will be on display throughout the week at Newlin Hall.

Another signature event is the Floyd County 4-H Fair Princess contest, which will be held at 7 p.m. Monday.

Scholarships will be awarded to the queen and the first and second runner-ups.

The cutest baby contest will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the entry fee for the event is $5.

There’s also an open entry category for members of the community. From 8 to 10 a.m. Monday, people can drop off projects for judging for a nominal fee.

The projects can be anything from photography and sewing to arts and crafts and gardening.

The talent contest will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and the midway will be open through Friday evening.

Meridia is hopeful the public will again embrace this year’s fair.

“Last year, we felt like attendance was far better than we had in several years and we’re looking forward to even better attendance this year,” she said.
