INDOT prepping to move homes in downtown Jeffersonville

Transfer is due to Ohio River Bridges Project

JEFFERSONVILLE — Tree trimming work is under way in order to make way for five homes to be moved in downtown Jeffersonville.

The five homes are being moved as part of a settlement agreement reached between the Indiana Department of Transportation, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and conservancy group River Fields Inc. to make way for the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Work is ongoing at most of the homes and the vacant lots where the homes will be moved, according to an INDOT press release. Contractors have begun trimming approximately 15 trees within the city’s right-of-way to make room along the routes being used to move the houses. Tree trimming will be limited to the minimum needed for the move and the routes were selected in an effort to limit tree trimming, the release says.

Streetscape trees on the south side of Riverside Drive also must be removed and will be replaced with trees of similar size and species, according to the release. During the tree trimming and house moving, parking restrictions will be in place. Signage will be placed to provide notification of the time and locations of these restrictions.

House moves are anticipated to begin in late May or early June and continue for about three weeks. After relocation, minor renovations will occur prior to the buildings being auctioned to new owners.
