Pence: Flags go half-staff for fallen officers

INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Mike Pence is directing flags at state facilities across Indiana be flown at half-staff Wednesday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The day honors federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

President Obama signed a proclamation ordering flags nationwide to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday. Flags should remain at half-staff until sunrise on Thursday.

Pence also asks businesses and residents to lower their flags to half-staff to pay tribute to the men and women in law enforcement across Indiana and the nation.

On Tuesday, the city of Jeffersonville issued a press release noting observance of the day.

“We pause to remember the brave men and women who each paid the ultimate price for our safety and protection," Mayor Mike Moore said in the release. "We will always remember their service, courage and sacrifice. We also remember and pay tribute to these officers’ families who must live with the loss of their loved one each and every day. If you visit the website of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (www.nleomf.org<http://www.nleomf.org/>), you will see a photograph of these words from survivor Vivan Eney Cross which are etched in stone on one of the blue-gray marble walls of The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.: 'It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.'

"In memory of those who gave their lives, please take a moment this week to say a word of thanks to a law enforcement officer. And please remember to live and drive safely."
