Freiberger to run for State Senate 46 seat

Floyd commissioner likely will face incumbent Ron Grooms again

FLOYD COUNTY — Democrat Chuck Freiberger, who is in his fourth term as a Floyd County commissioner, has announced plans to run for the State Senate 46 seat in 2014. The seat is held by Republican Ron Grooms, who Tuesday announced his re-election campaign.

Grooms defeated Freiberger four years ago, but the veteran Floyd County Democrat said that did not deter him from a possible rematch with Grooms.

“I don’t think that we have had the representation that District 46 deserves,” he said. “I believe jobs should have been the No. 1 priority and it wasn’t. Mr. Grooms and his Republican super-majority have only played politics for themselves instead of creating jobs for Indiana.

“The middle class, working men and women, have taken the punishment of this super-majority and of course public education has been hindered by them as well.”

Freiberger said he would be more of a voice for the residents of District 46. He said Grooms “did nothing” when it came to tolls on the bridges which have yet to be implemented.

“Now, Kentucky is getting the most gains and the residents of Jeffersonville and all of Indiana are going to pay the most for the projects,” he said. “Only one Kentucky car will cross the bridge for every six Indiana cars. You would think that the aesthetics of Jeff and Indiana would be as important as the Kentucky side of the river. I certainly do.”

The News and Tribune published a story about Grooms’ candidacy in the Tuesday edition.
